Africa's Great Wildebeest Migration happens 365 days a year
It’s true. While wildlife TV shows often lead you to believe the Great Migration takes place once a year, the fact is the wildebeest never stop moving.
A herd of around 2 million large beasts need plenty of food and water, so they’re always in search of greener pastures and water. They move like a thundering dark cloud across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem between Tanzania and Kenya, constantly being stalked by predators hoping for an easy meal. They never stop; their lives depend on it.
But we're the only ones who can guarantee you'll see this spectacular any day of the year
The herd doesn’t follow a calendar schedule; they follow nature’s clues to the latest rainfall, and with it, the freshest, greenest grass.
While one can more or less guess where they might be, it’s a gamble to head to one spot and wait for the herd. Sometimes you get lucky; sometimes you see nothing. This is why Great Migration Camps (GMC) is doing things differently in 2018: we’re not waiting for the herd to hopefully come to us; we’re following the herd for an entire year and taking our guests to them. This makes GMC the first and only operator worldwide to guarantee that you will see the Great Migration – not only once, but daily. It’s a big promise to make. But with our experts who have been tracking the wildebeest for more than 20 years and our camps that can move as fast as the migration does, it’s a promise we know we can deliver on 365 days a year.
Because we take you to the frontlines of the Great Wildebeest Migration
GMC has special permission to take our guests anywhere across the Serengeti/Masai Mara eco-system: the Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti, surrounding reserves, Masai Mara National Reserve and the Mara Triangle.
This includes remote areas where the general tourist is usually not able to venture. Just think: no crowds of game viewing vehicles jostling for best position, just us and the herd of 2 million wildebeest, and the predators trailing them. And while you’re out following the herd across the vast African plains, our team can move the camp to the next best location. This is a new concept in eco-tourism – it’s a world-first!
And we leave no trace
This is not luxury tented camping; there are already several five-star lodges in the area for that. This is frontier camping, it’s all about the experience.
Ours is the proverbial billion star hotel (just look up). But you’ll still have all the creature comforts you need: private ablutions, hot showers, a cosy bed, delicious hot meals cooked over an open fire and camp oven and, most importantly, an ice-cold beer or G&T to end another great day in Africa. GMC prides itself on being an eco-friendly 100% leave-no-trace operation. We leave nature just as we found it.
